Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Prosthodontist?
Prosthodontists are dentists who specialize in treating dental and facial conditions that affect one’s smile. They are THE experts in restoring and replacing any damaged or missing teeth. While some dentists may perform some cosmetic dentistry, prosthodontists dedicate their entire practice to providing their clients with beautiful, functional and healthy smiles.
Dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, and veneers are just some of the many procedures that prosthodontists perform. In addition to cosmetic dentistry, prosthodontists are also highly trained in treating conditions caused by temporomandibular joint disorders and other conditions that result in damaged teeth. Their extensive and rigorous training give them a special understanding of the latest technology and advanced techniques that treat oral-maxillary conditions while restoring beauty and function to the mouth.
To become a prosthodontist, one must not only complete a full dentistry program but three additional years of advanced training and education in an ADA-accredited prosthodontic graduate program. They must then pass an extensive examination to become board certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics. To continue practicing, prosthodontists must re-certify every eight years and maintain continuing education credits to show they are staying current with the ever-evolving practices of dentistry and prosthodontics.
